PROTECT PERIMETERS TO KEEP PESTS OUT

While fall weather attracts people outdoors to enjoy seasonal activities, the cooler temperatures begin to drive pests indoors. Occasional invaders like earwigs and crickets will soon become a more common household problem in the northeast.

Before these insects make their way indoors, attack them outside with perimeter treatments using Lava-Lor® Granular Bait. This ready-to-use formulation features two potent active ingredients for effective control of a range of crawling insects.

Another problem pest this season is the tick. Essentria® IC-3 Insecticide Concentrate is derived from essential oils and provides immediate knockdown and long residual control of the pest. Essentria® IC-3 treats ticks, mosquitoes, fleas and more which makes it great for areas with high human traffic such as trails and parks. Whether controlling ticks or occasional invaders, strong late-season suppression efforts can help limit population emergence come spring.

FIGHT FLEA-BORNE DISEASE WITH PRECOR

An outbreak of flea-borne typhus disease has reached “epidemic levels” in parts of California according to some experts, putting the public on high alert for these bloodsucking pests. Health officials are urging residents to keep pets indoors and consider the use of flea-control products.

Treating fleas can be difficult, with pre-adult fleas making up about 95% of the population in homes. To deal with this insect, an insect growth regulator (IGR) can help control non-adult pests. The Precor® line of products is powered by (S)-methoprene, an IGR that stops the development of immature fleas into adults. Precor® products are ideal for treating carpets, upholstered furniture, pet bedding and more, and they don’t stain or leave behind lingering odors or residue.

MOSQUITO POPULATIONS SURGE AFTER HURRICANE FLORENCE & MICHAEL

Following the heavy rains and massive flooding of Hurricane Florence and Michael, the southeast region is battling mosquitoes that were born and bred in post-storm standing water. In the fight against adult mosquitoes, I recommend Lambda 9.7 CS for its dual-encapsulation formulation that provides long residual control. Mavrik® Perimeter insecticide provides immediate knockdown power and is a good option for bee-sensitive areas. Essentria® IC-3 Insecticide Concentrate is effective for clients who want a botanical option in mosquito control. To prevent mosquito larvae from developing into breeding, biting adults, I recommend using Altosid® Liquid Larvicide in areas with standing water. Because mosquito larvae can survive in dry conditions for a few months, pre-treating with Altosid® Liquid Larvicide in areas prone to flooding helps control mosquito populations after floods.

One way of getting clients active in their mosquito control is to leave them a bottle of Altosid® Pro-G mosquito larvicide. The backyard mosquito solution provides up to 30 days of protection in standing water and can help engage clients to ensure effective control.

TIPS FOR CONTROLLING OCCASIONAL INVADERS

A warm and rainy summer brought about more mosquitoes in parts of the Midwest, which created an abundance of food for spiders that are now moving indoors as temperatures dip. Occasional invaders, including various beetles, centipedes, millipedes, earwigs and more, are on the rise, too. The Zenprox® lineup of products offers a range of versatile solutions providing effective knockdown of spiders and occasional invaders. When the infestation needs an extra boost, ExciteR™ provides the flushing power that stops flying and crawling insects alone or when mixed with insecticides like Zenprox® EC.

A tip from Mike: To prevent and control spiders and occasional invaders, apply Zenprox® Xtend Aerosol on window jambs and the bases of floors for quick and effective knockdown.

As the overnight temperatures dip further, remember to not leave products in your vehicles overnight. Freezing temperatures can decrease effectiveness and could cause product spills.

STOP CRICKETS, COCKROACHES AND FIRE ANTS WITH THE RIGHT BAITS

After a hot summer, the South-Central region had a rainy fall season, bringing black field crickets in heavy numbers. Lava-Lor® Granular Bait effectively controls these crickets inside and out with dual active ingredients. Groups of black field crickets can grow so large in areas like garages that they can be swept up into piles for removal.

Lava-Lor® Granular Bait can also be used for the control of American and Oriental cockroaches, two other common insect pests in our region. These pests spread pathogens onto clean surfaces and are notoriously difficult to treat. Lava-Lor® Granular Bait can be used as a perimeter treatment, in a bait station or in a shaker for hard-to-treat cracks and crevices to control cockroaches.

Finally, in the south, I like to remind PMPs to stay consistent with fire ant treatments at this time of year to help limit their emergence come spring.
